The success of the “blue consultation” related to the Marine Protected Area of Nice has prompted the metropolitan area to extend the initiative until August 31.

Since 2020, the Nice metropolitan area has been committed to the project of creating a Marine Protected Area. This is an essential management tool for the protection of the marine environment. Moreover, it promotes awareness for the preservation of biodiversity. This project thus comprises designated areas at sea. Extending from the Var estuary in the west to the Bay of Villefranche, this marine protected area encompasses a significant portion of the Azure coast.

Launched on June 9 in the presence of Christian Estrosi, the voluntary consultation encourages residents of Nice to share their testimonies on the Galets de Parole. They can also use the blue boxes available at the City Hall.

More than 450 opinions already submitted!

This blue consultation is experiencing great success. To maintain this dynamic of open dialogue, the Nice metropolitan area has decided to extend the consultation by one month. Residents of Nice will be able to continue sharing their testimonies, until August 31, using the eight new blue boxes currently being installed.

In addition to words, special attention is paid to the perspective of the people of Nice. “The people of Nice and the sea” is a photo contest whose 12 selected photos will be exhibited at the third United Nations Ocean Conference in 2025!

Nice, capital of the oceans in 2025

This marine protected area project is part of the preparation for the third United Nations Ocean Conference. Jointly organized by the French and Costa Rican governments, this conference carries a global dimension. It will undoubtedly be a foundational event for the future of the oceans.

The city of Nice will therefore host, in June 2025, nearly 120 Heads of State and Government. Additionally, no less than 20,000 representatives and speakers will address a historic agreement on ocean protection. It will be an opportunity for Nice to consider a requalification of its port.
