OP-ED: Gender-Based and Sexual Violence, Enough is Enough!

Latest News

This Thursday, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Collective for Women’s Rights 06 is calling for a march starting from Nice Train Station at 6:30 PM.

Half of humanity suffers from violence daily. Femicides, rapes, sexual assaults, sexual harassment, incest, obstetric violence, control over their bodies… these are tragic realities for millions, if not billions, of women around the world.

Femicide rates have not decreased. Thousands of women live in terror of male violence and endure daily beatings from their current or former partners. Sexist and sexual violence affects all walks of life. Although they are increasingly reported by the women who are victims, they too often remain unpunished, with minimal improvement in victim reception at police stations (Double Jeopardy), cases being dismissed, and non-suit verdicts continuing to fall, victims hesitate to file complaints.

The government has enacted laws without providing the means to enforce existing ones. The 2019 Grenelle had no effect, and the necessary billion euros is not there! We demand a real framework law. But for that, there needs to be genuine political will, not just high talk with little action and effective resources. Spain has done it. Why not France?

This November 25, in the street, we will carry the voices of all those who suffer multiple violences due to their vulnerability, age, social origin, disability, migrant status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or because they are racialized!

We support women around the world in their fight for the freedom of abortion and contraception, particularly our Polish and Texan friends. We support more than ever the struggles of Afghan women for their freedom and demand that our leaders welcome those who manage to escape.
