This Wednesday, students from Nice will visit the Camp des Milles Memorial Site, located in Aix-en-Provence. This project is part of a citizen awareness operation for students.

They will be welcomed by Alain Chouraqui, Chairman of the Camp des Milles Foundation โ€“ Memory and Education, in the presence of Christian Estrosi, President of the PACA Region.

The only large French internment and deportation camp (1939-1942), the Camp des Milles is today a major Museum of History and Human Sciences, unique in the world with its educational tools focused on the present.

Dedicated to civic education and teaching fraternity and respect for others, the site was designed not only as a history museum but also as a museum of ideas, an innovative laboratory in its content as well as its educational methods.

Its actions and missions aim, by relying on History, to strengthen everyone’s vigilance, especially young people, against identity extremisms, racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia, and discrimination.

Set up on the very premises of the former camp, the Memorial Site has been visited by more than 300,000 people, including many schoolchildren and young people.

Since its opening in 2012, it has become a reference site, both nationally and internationally (recognized by a UNESCO Chair bringing together academic and cultural institutions from 14 countries on 3 continents), for education against identity extremisms.
