The city of Nice gathered on May 8, 2024, to celebrate the 79th anniversary of the Armistice of World War II at the War Memorial.
In Nice, the ceremony took place this morning in front of the Rauba Capeu War Memorial. Many people from Nice attended alongside veterans and elected representatives, who laid wreaths in tribute to French and foreign soldiers.
“This year, May 8 no longer sounds like a day of victory but as a warning,” declared Estrosi, the Mayor of Nice. A palpable anxiety, a truth that imposes itself: the threat of war. Indeed, war seems to be knocking at our doors, with the conflicts in Ukraine, Israel, and Armenia, reminding us brutally that peace remains fragile.
On this 79th anniversary of victory, this day holds special significance. It is both a commemoration of past sacrifices and a reminder of the challenges that lie ahead.
