This issue has mobilized the citizens of the Roya Valley (or at least some associations) and has generated a lot of debate.
The complexity of inter-state relations, the bureaucracy whose efficiency does not meet the expectations of the population, has meant that timeframes have become extended, to the benefit of controversies and protagonists who do not easily leave the scene.
After so much delay, the renovation and safety works that will enable the operation of a “normal” service are set to begin and conclude, according to the schedule communicated by SNCF Rail, within 8 months.
Then, finally, we will be able to write the word “end” to a story that has taken on an excessive dimension.
Since August 7, preliminary work for the closure of the line has been taking place at the work base located at the Breil-sur-Roya station.
From September 4 to April 28, 2018, the main works will involve renewing track components, installing protective fences and rock-fall detection nets, and carrying out renovation work on five railway bridges.
TRANSPORT PLAN
Between Breil and Tende: A road substitution in coordination with train schedules has been set up by the Regional Council and the French Riviera Agglomeration Community (Zest’Bus network).
Between Nice and Breil: All trains will run normally.
Italian trains will also be replaced by buses.
The Train des Merveilles will terminate at Breil.
FUNDING
A convention was signed on March 30, 2015, between the Piedmont region, RFI, and SNCF Rรฉseau.
The works, amounting to 29 million euros, are entirely financed by the Italian state. SNCF Rรฉseau has invested an additional 2 million euros from its own funds to implement an Automatic Train Stop Device (DAAT) to secure operations.
