Christmas Cinephile Celebration: Holy Peggy!

Latest News

The film club hosted by Daniel Fimbel organized a lovely party last night at the Mercury after the screening of the film “Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict”.

Games about the visual arts and the history of cinema… and gifts for the participants!

The Guggenheim dynasty is a family of migrants of Swiss origin who made their fortune in mining precious metals. However, several of its members are primarily distinguished in the promotion of non-figurative Art.

Thus, Peggy’s uncle, Solomon Guggenheim, founded the various eponymous and world-renowned museums (New York, Bilbao, Berlin).

Peggy, moreover, confronted her uncle, reproaching him for the commercial nature of his exhibitions. She also created the small Guggenheim Museum in Venice located in the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal. Uncle would eventually recognize, at the end of his life, the foresight of his niece and the value of her acquisitions.

Besides, Peggy is a quirky personality who befriends the greatest artists (Jean Cocteau, Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, or Jackson Pollock whom she helped discover). She is also famous for her tumultuous romances and known for being as enamored with the artists themselves as with their works, without ever sacrificing the elegance of manners and the quality of human relationships.

In the image of her father, Benjamin, who went down with the Titanic in April 1912, dedicating his last moments to evacuating as many women and children as possible on the lifeboats. Before settling at the ship’s bar with his chauffeur and valet, awaiting the end of the sinking… You certainly never get bored with the Guggenheims!!!
