Last May, Christian Estrosi announced his intention to implement several actions against the nuisances caused by itinerant populations in the streets of Nice. In response to these aggravations and the delinquency, he announced the creation of the Municipal Grievance Management Group.
In the streets of Nice, the situation is critical. Christian Estrosi had already warned last May about the increase in disturbances related to itinerant populations. Two months later, the facts seem to prove him right. Reports are multiplying, particularly on Rue Tiranty, where drug users are shooting up in the street, in full view of everyone. Shocking images have been sent to the town hall to illustrate the distress of these individuals and the growing concern of local residents. To address this urgency, a municipal decree will come into effect on Tuesday, July 15 for reasons of public health and order. The street will be monitored from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with access limited to residents, merchants, and patients of medical offices.
Rather than limit themselves to repressive actions, the town hall is opting for a coordinated strategy. A mobile team composed of municipal police officers, cleanliness agents, and social workers is operating in several sensitive areas: Place Massรฉna, Jean Mรฉdecin, Gare du Sud, Place Garibaldiโฆ The objective: to establish contact, assess situations individually, and propose solutions.
In parallel, a health bus will circulate with a nurse to provide basic care to people in the street, along with a reorganization of food distributions by Inter-Secours Nice and the CCAS. All distributions will be centralized at the XVรจme corps to saturate the system.
Camps, illegal parking, and alcohol sales under scrutinyย
Certain places have become emblematic of this persistent poverty. In front of the Church of the Vow, a camp that has been set up for several years is drawing the attention of municipal services. To prevent any reinstallation, the churchโs garden will be closed. The same logic applies to the Promenade du Paillon, where childrenโs structures will soon be installed to reclaim public space.
The municipality is also tightening its policy on the illegal parking of caravans and camper vans, particularly in the areas of Carras, Lingostiรจre, and Simone Veil. Numerous specific decrees have been issued to carry out expulsions by the Prefect and law enforcement. Finally, the city’s night shops are under scrutiny: the sale of alcohol to intoxicated individuals is now closely monitored. Targeted checks are underway.
This establishment of the Municipal Grievance Management Group, in connection with elected officials, municipal services, and the Community Center for Social Action, aims to address these situations with firmness and dignity.
