Last Monday, the list of athletes participating in the World Athletics Championships, from September 13 to 21 in Tokyo, was unveiled on the various networks of the French Athletics Federation. Among the 74 selected, five athletes from the French Riviera are included.
Next Saturday, the World Athletics Championships will start in Tokyo, Japan. It’s an opportunity to watch our athletes from Nice compete for medals. Téo Andant, a member of AS Monaco, will not compete in the men’s 400 m events despite winning a bronze medal at the last French Championships in early August. He will participate in the men’s 4x400m relay.
Emma Montoya, a Nice native and athlete with the Nice Côte d’Azur Athletics Club, will strive to join the women’s 4×400 m relay team. Her spot as a starting runner is not secured, but having qualified the relay for the World Championships last May in Guangzhou, China, anything is possible. It’s worth noting that runner Louise Maraval, also selected for the 4×400 m relay, is also competing in the 400 m hurdles, her specialty. She could then give up her relay spot to Emma Montoya to focus on her solo race.
Another athlete from Nice, Sarah Richard Mingas. A 100 m specialist, she will also compete in the relay, this time the 4x100m. With the return from injury of sprinter Gémima Joseph, the French women’s relay team can hope for a medal.
Sacha Alessandrini, also a member of the Nice Côte d’Azur Athletics Club, will take part in the 100 m hurdles. With a personal best this season of 12.70 established last month, she remains some distance from the favorites in the discipline.
Last but not least, Makenson Gletty, born in Haiti and adopted by a French family, will compete in the decathlon. The 1.92m giant, an athlete from the Nice club, arrives at the World Championships as the French champion. Bronze medalist in 2024 at the European Championships at the age of 25, he is keen to continue his momentum by clinching another podium finish.
The competition begins on September 13, and all results of our French Riviera athletes can be followed on Nice Premium.
