The women’s section of OGC Nice will return to competition this weekend for the first matchday of the women’s football League Cup (LFFP). The Nice women will host RC Lens this Saturday, August 22 at 1:30 p.m. For its second edition, the competition is already evolving, and we explain why.
While the first edition included five separate groups, the LFFP Cup will now bring together 20 clubs in a single group. In this first phase, nine teams from Arkema Première Ligue (excluding the three qualified in European competition) and 11 teams from Second Division will compete over five matchdays. Each team plays four matches. In case of a draw after regular time, a penalty shootout will determine the winner, who will receive two points, against one for the loser.
The final phase
The top ten teams from the single group then face off in playoffs that will be drawn. Teams ranked first to fifth are guaranteed to host their matches. Five matches will determine the five teams advancing to the quarterfinals. At this stage of the competition, the European teams (Lyon Feminin, Paris FC and Paris Saint-Germain) join the qualified teams. This is followed by the traditional semifinals and the final that will determine the LFFP Cup winners on April 10, 2027.
As a reminder, it was the Lyon women who lifted the first edition after a victory against PSG (1-0) in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
A first great challenge for OGC Nice
On the occasion of the first matchday, the players coached by Alain Wathelet will face RC Lens, a resident of Arkema Première Ligue, who finished 11th in the last season. Notably, this opening match has been relocated to the Éric Estivals Stadium in Mandelieu-la-Napoule. An opener that comes after a difficult preparation, marked by two defeats against Montpellier (5-0), then against Cannes (3-1). This duel also takes on the air of revenge for the Eagles. Since 2023, the two teams have faced off four times in the Second Division, a record largely favorable to the Lens players with three victories, including a heavy 7-1, against a single Nice victory achieved in 2024.
