The Alpes-Maritimes are on orange alert due to a high-intensity stormy episode this Thursday, August 20, according to Météo France. From 1 p.m. onwards, intense electrical activity and heavy rainfall are expected over the department.

Following several weeks of radiant sunshine, the Alpes-Maritimes department is placed on orange alert for Storms from early afternoon through the evening.

Météo-France is forecasting a particularly violent rainy and stormy phenomenon for the Alpes-Maritimes and the Var department, in coastal zones and in elevated areas. Storms will be locally and temporarily severe, accompanied by heavy rainfall and wind gusts. The department is also placed on yellow alert for “rain and flooding” from 1 p.m. This phenomenon is being closely monitored by forecasters until Friday, August 21.

Intense storms, heavy rainfall and wind gusts

The entire Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur region is affected by this phenomenon, but particular vigilance is being given to the Alpes-Maritimes and the Var department.

Forecasters are warning of intense rainfall, with accumulations of 40 to 60 mm in less than an hour. Volumes could reach 100 to 120 mm in some places. Wind gusts approaching 80 km/h could impact the entire coastline, as well as the mid-country areas. Finally, hail showers are expected during the day.

In light of the significant electrical activity and heavy rainfall accumulations, the Alpes-Maritimes Prefecture is calling for vigilance “before any outdoor activity” and emphasizing the importance of adopting cautious behavior throughout the duration of the alert.
