Ligue 1: OGC Nice held to a draw by Le Mans

Initially sluggish, OGC Nice draws with Le Mans (1-1), despite the goal from Elye Wahi. The Eagles will have to wait a little longer before securing a win in Ligue 1 this season.

OGC Nice welcomes its fans back to finally launch its season. Supported by its supporters in its first outing of the year, facing FC Lorient (0-0), the Eagles regain the backing of the twelfth man this Saturday evening. The objective is simple: finally launch the Nice season, a week after the heavy defeat at Paris FC (0-3). Facing the promoted Sarthe side, the Azurean club plays a match in a particularly special context. The Gym and Populaire Sud chose this fixture to pay tribute to the 86 angels victims of the attack on the Promenade des Anglais on July 14, 2016, just over ten years after this tragedy. To honor their memory, Sofiane Diop and his teammates wore a unique kit to play this match against Le Mans.

On the lineup side, Olivier Pantaloni made some changes to his starting eleven. This match marked the grand return of Elye Wahi as a starter. In the left wing, Niels Nkounkou was going to play his first minutes in red and black. Up front, Nathan Ngoumou was preferred to Gautier Hein and Mohammed Amoura.

Never forget

After this classy tribute, we expected OGC Nice to perform well at kick-off. And yet, it was Le Mans who dictated play on the pitch, confident and without any pressure. Facing them, the Gym was purring along. There was a severe lack of movement and creativity in the Nice ranks. The promoted side ended up punishing their opponent (0-1, 13′). Bourabaa’s long-range shot left no chance for Yehvann Diouf. The action came, once again, from a loss of possession by the Azureans in their final twenty-five meters.

Like their first two outings, Olivier Pantaloni’s squad was in great difficulty in the final third. The Eagles were long ineffective, even sluggish. And like last year, the solution to this kind of puzzle is named Elye Wahi. It only took a half-chance for the Gym’s striker to level the score just before the break (1-1, 44′). Sent through by Sofiane Diop, the fans’ new favorite beat his defender for pace, then cut back the opposing goalkeeper and finished into an empty net. Nice is back in the game at the best time!

Frustration and regrets

In front of its crowd, would OGC Nice turn this match around? The opening minutes of the second half started slowly, neither team wanting or able to take control of the game. At the hour mark, Olivier Pantaloni opted for two substitutions: Gauthier Hein and Mohammed Amoura came on.

The Eagles pushed forward but are not (yet) rewarded. There was still something missing, that little bit of luck to regain the advantage. Sent through on goal, Elye Wahi didn’t direct his attempt on target. The desired outcome did not come, OGC Nice concedes the draw and still hasn’t won in Ligue 1 (1-1). The Nice players produced a better performance in the second half without being able to win tonight. Frustration and regrets are coming out of the Allianz Riviera.
