The mobilization of secondary school students continued on Tuesday, September 29 in several cities in the Alpes-Maritimes. According to the prefecture, the operation of 18 establishments was disrupted: seven in Nice, four in Grasse, two in Cagnes-sur-Mer, two in Cannes, two in Menton and one in Vence.
The number of affected establishments is higher than on Monday. The prefecture indicates, however, that the number of protesting students was smaller. Dialogue with teaching staff and students continued in several establishments, often in a calm manner.
Outbreaks of violence were also noted during the day. The Alpes-Maritimes prefecture indicates that people from outside joined several secondary school gatherings. A mass intrusion occurred in particular at the Pierre and Marie Curie secondary school in Menton. Security forces quickly contained the situation.
Around fifty arrests and 34 people in police custody
Security forces deployed around the establishments carried out around fifty arrests. The incidents involved include throwing projectiles, launching mortars, deliberate fires, property damage, offenses against public officials and violence.
By midday, 34 people were in police custody. The heads of the affected establishments must also systematically refer disciplinary committees for the students involved and identified.
Seven national police officers were slightly injured, including two in Grasse and five in Menton. Eight secondary school students were also slightly injured, in particular following smoke inhalation, firecracker explosions or during brawls.
Firefighters were also mobilized for several fires involving trash cans or debris in Nice, Cannes, Cagnes-sur-Mer and Menton. Two young girls were injured according to SDIS 06. Care was provided in particular at Pasteur 2 hospital in Nice.
In Nice, gatherings took place notably in front of the Estienne-d’Orves, Calmette, Vauban, Les Palmiers and Parc impérial secondary schools. Tear gas was used according to several videos published on social media. The movement also affected Carnot secondary school in Cannes, whose entrance was blocked for approximately two hours in the morning. Secondary school students also joined the procession of the demonstration dedicated to the defense of public services in the city center of Nice.
The situation returned to calm in the afternoon, shortly after 4 p.m. Security forces remain mobilized and attentive to developments in the movement. The Alpes-Maritimes prefect again condemned the outbreaks of violence and expressed his support for the educational community.
