On Wednesday, October 14, around fifty students, including 33 high school graduates, gathered at Nice City Hall to celebrate their knowledge of the local language, Nissart. In turn, Éric Ciotti presented them with a diploma. A fine reward that highlights a traditional heritage that must be perpetuated.

The heritage of the traditional Niçois language continues to endure. This Wednesday, October 14, in the heart of Nice’s city hall, 33 Niçois high school graduates were rewarded for their excellent results in Nissart during the 2026 Baccalaureate. In the assembly, families, friends and teachers gathered to immortalize this emotionally charged moment.

In turn, the newly graduated students came forward to retrieve this diploma attesting to their mastery of the local language. Students from middle schools and primary schools were also present, with their Nissart teachers, to join in the celebration, and celebrate the learning of the local language.

For the Mayor of Nice, Éric Ciotti, the preservation and transmission of this regional language must remain at the heart of local concerns: « I am very happy to celebrate your success this evening and to see how much Nissart continues among young generations. It is a heritage we must be proud of, and you are its most beautiful face. » The mayor even ended his speech with a phrase in Nissart: « viva la jouinessa, viva Nissa la Bella! »

Perpetuating Tradition

Every year, this ceremony that links youth to the Niçois regional language takes place in October. It is an important event that rewards the commitment of the rare qualified Nissart teachers.

The local Niçois language is a precious witness to the history and way of life of past generations on the Côte d’Azur, but it is a heritage that is gradually being lost. Beyond the simple language, Nissart evokes customs, traditions, and thus embodies a collective memory to be preserved.

So, as said by Serge Chiaramonti, president of the Federation of Associations of the County of Nice, and former Nissart teacher: « you bring our language and culture to life, and it is now up to you to pass on this heritage to those around you. »
