A cross-sector strike day is planned for Thursday, November 5, 2026 in the Alpes-Maritimes. Two demonstrations are declared in Nice and Cannes, with departures at 10 o’clock in front of SNCF train stations. Rail traffic will also be heavily disrupted, while several public services and educational establishments could be affected.
The national mobilization on Thursday, November 5 is intended to bring together several trade union organizations around demands focusing in particular on salaries, purchasing power, employment and public services. In the Alpes-Maritimes, the prefecture has confirmed two declared demonstrations, in Nice and Cannes. Police forces will be mobilized to oversee the processions and ensure the safety of participants, residents and businesses. Beyond the gatherings, this day could cause difficulties in transport, municipal services and educational establishments. Here’s a rundown.
A Nice procession between the train station and Place Masséna
The Nice demonstration will start at 10 o’clock from Nice-Ville SNCF train station before heading to Place Masséna. According to the route declared by the CGT to the prefecture, participants will take Avenue Thiers, Avenue Gambetta, the Promenade des Anglais and Avenue Max-Gallo.
The procession will thus skirt around the commercial heart of the city center and will not pass through Avenue Jean-Médecin. The prefecture specifies, however, that access to this avenue from Place Masséna will be prohibited at the time of the demonstration’s dispersal.
In Cannes, the gathering will follow a different route. From the SNCF station, protesters will take Rue des Serbes, Rue d’Antibes, Rue du Maréchal-Joffre and Promenade de la Pantiero, before reaching Place Cornut-Gentille.
To oversee the two mobilizations, numerous police forces nationwide, including a CRS company, will be deployed with the support of municipal police. No figures have yet been released.
Regional trains heavily disrupted in the Alpes-Maritimes
Train travel should also be complicated on Thursday. In an alert published on November 3, SNCF announces “very heavily disrupted” traffic on several regional lines.
Three routes are particularly affected: Les Arcs-Draguignan–Ventimiglia, Grasse–Ventimiglia and Nice–Breil–Tende. Travelers are advised to plan their trips in advance. The operator also recommends prioritizing remote work when possible.
Users of the ZOU bus network are also urged to check before hitting the road. Detailed traffic forecasts are announced on the TER Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur website.
Possible disruptions in schools and municipal services
The strike could also have consequences for the functioning of local authorities. In Nice, a notice filed by the CGT covers the entire day for city employees, the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolitan Authority and the Community Social Action Center (CCAS).
At this stage, the municipality has confirmed one cancellation: the tour of “My Mobile Town Hall,” which allows residents to carry out various administrative procedures, will not operate on Thursday.
In educational establishments, the situation remains variable depending on the municipalities. In Cagnes-sur-Mer, the School Fund has warned families of possible disruptions during school and after-school hours. Catering and after-school care could be particularly affected. However, no specific establishment has been identified.
In Nice, no list of affected schools or any forecast of strike participation are available at this stage. Families will therefore need to contact each establishment to find out about any changes to operations.
Blockades are also expected in some secondary schools and university establishments. The mobilized organizations wish to expand the movement beyond the public sector and bring together private sector employees, public officials, high school students, students and retirees.
Salaries, employment and purchasing power at the heart of the mobilization
The demands focus once again on the question of salary increases, the minimum wage, retirement pensions and the civil service index point. Trade unions are also calling for measures in favor of employment, industry and public services, as well as a better distribution of wealth.
Initially led by an inter-union bringing together the CFDT, CGT, FO, Unsa and FSU, the mobilization should also count on the participation of high school and student organizations as well as the Yellow Vests.
The day of November 5 could thus go beyond the sole framework of public administrations. Several private sectors are also concerned by calls for a strike, notably telecommunications, banks and insurance. Healthcare, hospital establishments and transport are also among the sectors likely to experience disruptions.
In the Alpes-Maritimes, this mobilization comes a few days after the demonstration organized in Nice on Saturday, October 31. The prefecture had counted 4,200 participants at that time, against 9,000 according to the organizers. It remains to be seen how much participation there will be on Thursday, as trade unions hope to make this day a common meeting point around purchasing power and working conditions.
