A 150th anniversary for Nice marked by beautification

Latest News

It was 150 years ago, on June 10, 1860, a historic date when the County of Nice became part of France. For the 150th anniversary, the City of Nice decided to pull out all the stops. 150 measures are planned, 8 of which are already being launched, to beautify and renovate the historic heart of the city, the Old Nice.

Among the mentioned measures are the redevelopment of Rue de l’Hôtel de Ville and Rue Alexandre Mari, Place Gautier, Terrasses des Ponchettes, and the renovation of the covers and structures of the Cours Saleya market.

“Nice in beauty” for the year 2009:

It’s the will of Christian Estrosi who wants “the sidewalks to be returned to the public” by the fall of 2009. Rue de l’Hôtel de Ville will be rearranged, and the sidewalks will be widened to facilitate pedestrian access. The same goes for the Ponchettes, where pedestrian circulation will be restored near the Cité du Parc. Moreover, renovation and security works will be carried out at one of the most well-known markets in the city of Nice, the Cours Saleya. Prototypes of taller and wider covers are already installed there. As for Place Pierre Gautier, plantations of brigadiers will be installed. The anarchic parking and the kiosk that shelters the caretaker will be removed. Finally, Place Rossetti and Rue St François de Paule will be rehabilitated. According to the Deputy-Mayor, the latter will become “one of the most beautiful and attractive places in Nice.” To achieve this beautification, traffic flow must be improved. He believes vehicles only create unnecessary traffic and wishes to allow access only to residents.
