A beautiful tourist season this summer

Latest News

According to the figures from the Cรดte d’Azur France Tourism Observatory, the summer of 2024 on the French Riviera stands out for its originality. An increase in tourist visits, a strengthened foreign presence, and exceptional hotel occupancy mark this summer season.

The summer of 2024 emerges as a season of renewal for the Cรดte d’Azur. The region shows an increase in hotel occupancy, with nearly 85% of rooms filled, surpassing the figures for 2023. This year, Nice shines particularly, reaching a rate of 88%, with peaks during major events like the Tour de France. Cannes and Antibes follow this trend, also benefiting from an influx of tourists attracted by large cultural and sporting events.

A reinvented seasonality

One of the notable features of this summer is the unprecedented distribution of tourist flows. Unlike previous years, the tourist presence extends from May to October, creating a more lively late season. This phenomenon is explained by a mix of factors, including favorable weather and a more diversified tourist offer, thus attracting visitors throughout this period.

Foreigners present, French more in retreat

International tourism takes the lead, with a clear increase in foreign visitors, particularly from North America and the Middle East. However, the French clientele shows a decline, as a result of a search for exoticism or decreased purchasing power. This imbalance affects budget accommodations, especially in areas more dependent on domestic tourists.

Tourist spending on the rise

While the presence of French tourists decreases, the spending of foreign tourists is skyrocketing. It even exceeds pre-pandemic levels. International visitors spend on average 60% more per day than locals. This financial boon boosts the regional economy and offsets the slight decline in attendance observed in some sectors.

The summer peak in August

August stands out as the heart of the tourist season. Hotel occupancy rates rise, reaching 87% on the coast. Although this performance is slightly lower than last year’s, revenue is significantly higher, showing a 9% increase. The peak in tourist attendance occurs around August 15th, with a strong increase in bookings towards the end of the month, suggesting a generally positive summer review for the entire region.
