In Nice, a building threatened with collapse has been fully evacuated.
On Boulevard Victor-Hugo, just above the “Jean-Médecin” tramway station, a six-story building is at risk of collapsing.
It was weakened in 2017 following the drilling of the line 2 tramway tunnel. Then in 2018, cracks appeared on the façade of the building, although an expert report had concluded that there was “no danger.”
The situation has since significantly worsened, with concerns mounting over time and finally materializing with a danger decree issued by the city in early January.
The structure suffers notably from “structural damage” and “a facade tilt of more than 5%.”
The city council thus issued an “imminent danger” order and mandated the evacuation of the last remaining residents of the building, which includes four apartments and a commercial space on the ground floor. The building is now surrounded by scaffolding, and access is prohibited.
Legal action has been taken against the company responsible for the tramway work, which has acknowledged its liability in the matter.
