The Ancient Music Society of Nice (SMAN) presents the concert “For Several Friends” on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at 8:30 PM at the La Providence Cultural Center. An immersion into the refined world of the viola da gamba and consorts of the English Renaissance.
The viola da gamba will be in the spotlight at this concert organized by SMAN. A string instrument, emblematic of the Renaissance and early Baroque period. It is often appreciated for its warm tone, close to the human voice. The public will discover a program dedicated to the works of English composers such as Locke, Hume, Dowland, Purcell, Holborne, and Gibbons.
On stage, Sibylle Schuetz-Carrière, Étienne Mangot, and André Lislevand will play consort pieces for viols, an ensemble of instruments with varied ranges. The evening will explore different configurations of consorts, from the homogeneous “whole consort” to the “broken consort” blending various sounds.
A Springboard Concert for Young Talents
The event also highlights students specializing from several regional institutions. Represented are the Rainier III Academy of Monaco, the CRR of Nice, the CRC of Valbonne, and the Semeuse Music School. These young musicians will perform alongside professionals, offering a wonderful opportunity for transmission and musical sharing.
This concert is a unique moment to discover the richness of the sounds of the viola da gamba. Each piece will be introduced by the gradual entry of musicians on stage, offering a constantly evolving musical experience.
