A Jean Moulin Street in Nice as a duty of remembrance?

Latest News

Today we commemorate the anniversary of the sacrifice of Jean Moulin, head of the National Council of the Resistance during World War II, a symbol of French heroism, assassinated by the Gestapo on July 8, 1943.

On December 19, 1964, a solemn speech was delivered during the grand official ceremony where Andrรฉ Malraux, the Minister of Cultural Affairs, inducted Jean Moulin into the “Pantheon of Great Men” of the French Republic.

During his years of resistance, his connection with Nice was very important. He often stayed there from 1942 onwards, and it was at 22 rue de France that he opened the Romanin gallery, inaugurated in February 1943 and which served as a venue for many resistance activities.

However, although a commemorative plaque has been placed at this address and a stele erected in the Thiole garden, no significant place in the city bears the name of Jean Moulin.

On this day, a symbol of French heroism, Xavier Garcia, secretary of the Socialist Federation of the Alpes-Maritimes, makes a proposal:

“It would be a magnificent symbol that for the 75th anniversary of his death, in 2018, the rue de France, which housed his clandestine activities and bears the name of the country he served so heroically, should be renamed rue Jean Moulin,” he said.

A very beautiful idea that must be supported by all political and social parties and movements in a spirit of patriotism and memory.

We must hope that the mayor of Nice does not oppose or, on the contrary, adopts this proposal as his own. The opposite would be very disappointing and unjustified.
