A mother evicted from her home for her son’s offenses

In Nice, a mother is at risk of being evicted from her home in the Ariane neighborhood. The reason? Her son’s conviction for drug trafficking.

A mother and her 19-year-old son are facing the possibility of being evicted from their social housing. This decision stems from the young man’s 20-month prison sentence for drug trafficking.

The prosecutor’s office and the Alpes-Maritimes prefecture have signed an agreement that allows social housing providers to be informed in case a resident is charged.

Furthermore, a reform of the internal regulations for public housing rental contracts authorizes landlords to initiate eviction proceedings against tenants who have been convicted by the courts.

“With the prosecutor and the prefect, we have signed an agreement that allows us, when the tenant or a person under their responsibility (…) commits serious offenses, to obtain an eviction from the courts,” explains Anthony Borré, president of the Côte d’Azur Habitat, a social housing provider, and deputy mayor on RMC radio.

To secure the eviction of the occupants, Côte d’Azur Habitat took the matter to the judicial court and won the case on July 13. The family is likely to be evicted and must pay a fine of 500 euros.

This situation has sparked a wave of indignation among some of the population, who believe the mother should not have to pay for her son’s actions. Nonetheless, she can appeal the decision if she wishes.

In Nice, 70 similar proceedings are underway.
