A municipal day in Nice for the disabled

Latest News

As every Wednesday, the nautical base at the port of Nice is well-filled. But this time, there are few or no windsurfers and helmsmen. Indeed, about 200 people, both able-bodied and disabled, are present at the annual “All Together” event to enjoy the joys of the sea. For 11 years, non-profit associations and disabled individuals have gathered to demonstrate that each person with a disability can be “valued through an adapted sporting practice and can achieve feats comparable to those of able-bodied persons.”

“This day is a part of the event. It focuses on sports activities adapted for all types of disabilities.”

The day’s agenda includes sailing and boating tours. A workshop will be dedicated to viewing documentaries about the sea. This workshop is offered by the “Marine World” association, explains Dominique Caramico.

“This gathering includes people with mental, motor, and sensory disabilities. The event is open to everyone. It’s a way to promote integration.”

Jacques Dejeandile hopes the event goes well. “What I would like in the future is to involve schools and sports associations more. I think there are not enough able-bodied people participating. It’s a real pity!” Journalist and city council advisor, Jacques Dejeandile has been motor disabled since the age of 30, following a car accident.

“We are the only city where there are two elected officials with disabilities. This does not prevent the city from lagging in terms of infrastructure for disabled people.”

The municipality has many projects, especially in terms of public transportation. “There is still much progress to be made at this level!”
