The red palm weevil has been present in France since 2006 and poses a threat to the palm heritage, particularly to the Canary Island date palm.
The insect lives in colonies inside the palm where it destroys the tissues to feed. The deterioration of the tissues leads to the formation of a “cavity” presenting a weak point. This creates a risk of the fronds and the apical part of the palm falling.
