Faced with the social emergency and the growing needs of the homeless, a second shelter opens in Nice. This opening is in partnership with the Secours Populaire.
With the arrival of the cold weather, the municipality is intensifying its actions to support people without stable housing. In addition to existing measures, a second emergency shelter is opening its doors at 1 rue Fodéré Prolongée. This initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy led by the CCAS of Nice, in collaboration with local associations, to provide unconditional and suitable shelter.
Christian Estrosi expressed the rationale behind this approach in a press release: “Several sites, several solutions are offered in Nice, but men, women, and children do not know where to sleep or how to protect themselves from the cold. This is intolerable. That is why, as I pledged, I have decided to take new emergency measures.”
A flexible center open to all
In January 2023, nearly 250 homeless people were living on the streets of Nice. The new center, which is flexible, can accommodate 20 to 50 people. It is intended for men, women, and families, except for unaccompanied minors. Accessible every day from 7 PM to 8 AM, it offers suitable reception conditions thanks to a close partnership between the CCAS, the Metropolis Health Security Agency, and the Secours Populaire.
The responsibilities are divided: the CCAS ensures security and reception, the Metropolis provides equipment, and the Secours Populaire manages logistics, including snacks.
This initiative complements the existing system, which includes the Trachel Emergency Shelter and the El Nouzah site. The latter, opened since December, offers 46 places exclusively for men. With the arrival of winter temperatures, its capacity is regularly saturated, making the opening of a new space essential.
Christian Estrosi concludes by praising “the unwavering commitment of partner associations, volunteers, our staff, and all those, even anonymous ones, who mobilize with dedication to help and support the most vulnerable individuals.”
