This Friday, the Sam Joubij sports complex, located in the Ariane district, will be inaugurated.
This sports complex includes, on a surface of more than 4,100m², an indoor field approved for futsal (five-a-side indoor football game) with changing rooms, a stand with 200 seats, an infirmary, offices, and an outdoor multisport field on the roof of the gymnasium.
The facility will be named after Sam Joubij, who passed away in January 2015. From the opening of the Lino Ventura Theatre in 1992, Sam Joubij served as the head of security. An amateur boxer turned professional (a semi-finalist in the French professional tournament and an amateur French champion), he established the “Ariane Boxing Club” in 2000 to promote the practice of this sport in Ariane. Additionally, he regularly worked in the neighborhood as a mediator.
The Sam Joubij sports complex is one of the most significant public facilities created as part of phase I of the Ariane urban renewal project (currently nearing completion) but also foreshadows phase II, due to the gymnasium’s geographic location in the northern part of the district, on the banks of the Paillon.
Since 2007, the Ariane district has benefited from a comprehensive requalification operation, which is organized into two phases. Phase I focuses on the Saint-Pierre block, encompassing Emile Ripert, Anatole de Monzie, Jouhaux, and Château Saint-Pierre streets. Phase II mainly concerns the area known as the Paillon, which includes social housing complexes owned by Côte d’Azur Habitat.
