Yesterday, Wednesday January 19, an arrest in the city center of Nice resulted in a death. Here’s what we know about it.
A man in his twenties was killed by a police officer yesterday, during a police operation that was underway as part of the investigation into the homicide that took place on Christmas Eve.
“It was scheduled to occur in the center of Nice. Several people were indeed arrested and are in custody, but one of the arrests went wrong,” stated the Prosecutor of the Republic of Nice, Xavier Bonhomme.
One of the police officers used his service weapon and shot a man in the neck. The 22-year-old man died 45 minutes later, according to the magistrate. The reasons why the officer used his weapon are currently still unknown.
This officer, a member of the research and intervention brigade (BRI), has been placed in custody for voluntary manslaughter.
The victim apparently had no weapon on him at the time of the arrest, so the IGPN was immediately assigned to the case.
