As a prelude to the Year of Russia in France, a Russian Christmas in Nice, set in the heart of Place Masséna, is organized by the Office of Tourism & Congresses, in collaboration with the City of Nice for the fourteenth consecutive year.
From December 5, 2009, to January 6, 2010, every day from 11 am to 8 pm, on Place Masséna, the village will gather about fifty chalets offering a wide range of Christmas crafts.
A novelty this year is that three chalets will be dedicated to an exhibition on Russia, its culture, and its traditions.
Fun Activities
As every year, a large ice rink of nearly 500 m² will welcome the most athletic in the Jacques Médecin forum during four sessions of one and a half hours each day – 11 am, 1 pm, 3 pm, and 5 pm.
In a winter setting setting the tone for the festivities, strollers will discover the enchanted forest of 750 fir trees on Place Masséna.
Children can also enjoy a play area, located on Jardin Albert 1er, with a Ferris wheel and rides.
City Illuminations
A true lighting scenography will announce the festivities throughout the city…
The highlight will be Place Masséna where a real sound and light show will be
presented throughout the space. Its inauguration on December 4 will be an event. Along the Promenade des Anglais and in all the main spots, kilometers of garlands, shimmering sculptures will all be designed for reduced energy consumption (50% less this year). Place Garibaldi and the Basilica of Notre-Dame will also be the stage for light shows, a strong sign of the event’s increasing intensity and respect for the environment.
2nd Christmas Illuminated Balconies Contest
After its success in 2008, a “2nd Christmas Illuminated Balconies Contest” from December 10 to 19 (registration period from November 16 to December 7) is being held again. Initiated by the City, this operation aims primarily “to give a festive look to the city by involving residents in enhancing their environment.” Three prizes are awarded in each of the eight territories.
