Within the city hall in Nice, Christian Estrosi, the mayor of the city and president of the Nice Côte-d’Azur Metropolis, inaugurated the establishment of the Health, Environmental Safety, and Risk Management Agency.
While on May 4th, the Nice Côte-d’Azur Metropolis created France’s first Health, Environmental Safety, and Risk Management Agency, its official installation took place this Thursday, January 14th.
### A Plan Finally Becoming Reality
This project is not new. Prior to the onset of the Covid-19 health crisis, Christian Estrosi wanted to put in place a tool capable of orchestrating the coordination of emergency responses in critical situations. A tool considered a few months ago has become a necessity today.
“We are the first to commit to implementing a specific tool both for managing situations stemming from epidemic, terrorist, or even climatic conditions like Storm Alex,” said the mayor of the city, in the presence of Richard Chemla, vice-president of the Metropolis in charge of ecological transition and a key figure in the project.
Initially faced with Covid-19 and then with Storm Alex, the Safety Agency quickly demonstrated its effectiveness in handling these two crises. Christian Estrosi consistently aims to stay ahead for his city and its residents: “We want to be in a strategy of anticipation,” he declared. The agency’s goal is based on anticipation to minimize the effects of crises on the population as much as possible. This agency possesses the experts and skills to address several key issues such as health crises, the environment, and risks related to management, such as terrorism and insecurity. Alongside him, around the table, and behind the city hall’s plasma screen, are several competent actors united in the project.
### An Expert Team at the Helm
To enhance the resilience of the city of Nice, the Health, Environmental Safety, and Risk Management Agency is equipped with several actors essential for the proper implementation of the tool. Several top-notch physicians supervise the health aspect, with one word resonating during this videoconference— “vaccine.” A word the city’s mayor didn’t fail to react to: “Get vaccinated, sign up at the vaccination centers.”
Beyond the health aspect, ecology and the environmental dimension are also key themes highlighted. Jean Pierre Goux, a mathematician and engineer from Nice, emphasizes a methodology that quantifies solutions by nourishing them with the best available scientific data. Richard Chelma, the mayor’s right-hand man in this project, had the final word: “The obligation to endure gives us the right to know.” The developed project will also be able to benefit from startups ready to offer their services to the city of Nice.
