jpg_chu-nice.jpg The international nature underscores that all countries are affected, and stroke remains to this day the leading cause of permanent acquired disability in adults in industrialized countries.

In France, every year, 150,000 new cases will be recorded, and half of them will have debilitating aftereffects.

A day of awareness is organized at the CHU of Nice

Wednesday, October 29 starting at 10 a.m.

The medical and paramedical team will answer questions and provide information focused on three points:

1) Stroke is a medical emergency. It is important to know the signs of a stroke: sudden loss of muscle strength on one side of the body, loss of vision or speech, sudden and severe headache, unexplained fall.

The right reflex is to immediately call 15, in order to be hospitalized urgently because treatments are more effective the earlier they are administered.

2) Stroke can be prevented. High blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, being overweight or obese, high cholesterol levels, a sedentary lifestyle, and heart diseases promote the occurrence of strokes in many cases. It is also necessary to identify transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) which last a few minutes and recover spontaneously but indicate an impending major stroke. Treating a TIA can prevent a major stroke.

3) After a stroke, the patient and their loved ones will do better if they understand the mechanism of their disease, the impact on daily life, and the measures to prevent a recurrence.

The paramedical team of the Neurovascular Unit of Nice has developed educational posters to explain the various consequences of a stroke (motor, speech, and swallowing disorders, depression…) and nurses will explain effective preventive measures to avoid a recurrence: managing high blood pressure, balanced diet, regular physical activity, and monitoring one’s weight are effective measures that everyone can undertake either to prevent the stroke or to avoid a recurrence.

After a first stroke, it is crucial to understand your treatment to take it precisely.
