Abderrazak FETNAN (PS): We must punish the delinquents and not penalize the merchants.

After the cantonal election in Brignoles, the tone has hardened, and unfortunately, we’re sliding towards increased security measures. And to think we still have to wait another five months until the next municipal elections… What will these last weeks bring! “Silent enim leges inter arma,” said Cicero, who knew a thing or two!

fetnan-2.jpg The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, has just issued a decree for takeout shops and hair salons on Rue Trachel, Vernier, and the surrounding areas to close by 9 PM. However, just a few months ago, the administrative court had already rejected the closure of grocery stores before 12:30 AM.

With this decree, the mayor of Nice has just acknowledged that despite his 744 cameras and 380 municipal police officers, and despite his statements about his ability to protect the people of Nice, he is incapable of maintaining order in two or three streets in the city center. To restore calm, he issues an exceptional decree and decides to eliminate local commerce in this neighborhood.

If we take this logic to its end, we might as well close certain streets to traffic to avoid double-parking, stop hosting major events in our city to avoid traffic jams, or even empty our apartments of valuable items to avoid being burglarized!

A city needs security. The priority in terms of security is to prevent and, above all, punish those who do not respect the law and create disorder.

It is not about sanctioning consumers who need local shops. Nor is it about implementing a collective punishment that would destroy the working tools of honest shopkeepers, who are themselves already victims of this insecurity.
