Homero Figueroa, the spokesperson for the President of the Dominican Republic, confirmed the murder and named the main suspect, Miguel Cruz.
“On behalf of the government and the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, we express our sincerest condolences to the Mera Villegas family on the occasion of the death of the Minister of the Environment, Orlando Jorge Mera,” stated Homero Figueroa, spokesperson for President Abinader and Director of Strategy and Communication for the government.
Mr. Figueroa said that he hoped God would give them the strength to face this terrible loss. He also stated that the government and the President remain at the family’s disposal for any needs.
“The information we have so far indicates that in the early hours of this morning, the Minister of the Environment lost his life when he was attacked in his office with a firearm. Miguel Cruz, the person identified as the shooter, was a personal friend of the deceased minister,” said the spokesperson for the presidency. Mr. Figueroa announced that the perpetrator of the attack is in the custody of the national police and the prosecutor’s office. “The reasons for this incident are under investigation. We will continue to share information in due course,” he added.
