The city celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Yemanja Festival with a festival from June 30 to July 2, a tradition reflecting Brazilian multiculturalism. An invitation to live together.
This weekend, the warmth of Brazil will fill the streets of Nice. It’s the perfect opportunity for the people of Nice to discover Brazilian culture through a tradition coming straight from Salvador de Bahia. The current Brazilian cultural capital was the country’s first capital during colonial times. Thus, the slaves brought from Africa carried with them their beliefs and their festivals. The Yemanja Festival is traditionally held on February 2. It celebrates the cult of the African deity, queen of the sea, fertility, and family.
“Join us in this special celebration and let yourself be enveloped in an atmosphere of love and spirituality”, the organizers share on their social media. Numerous activities are planned in the sun-drenched capital. Organized by the Brazilian cultural association of Nice, Brasuca Danse, the event is supported by the municipality under the guidance of Maty Diouf, deputy for women’s rights and the fight against discrimination. The overall aim of the festival is to promote the values of living together.
The parade on Sunday, July 2 marks the highlight of the festivities. The meeting is set for 4 PM at the water mirror of the Promenade du Paillon. The departure is scheduled for 5:30 PM. The organizers promise a fiery event. More than 30 associations and 150 artists will parade for a grand, free, and accessible finale for everyone. At the end of the gathering and the “colorful” parade, a flower offering to the goddess Yemanja will take place at Opéra-plage.
