After the Regional Elections: Avoiding the Next Wave…

Latest News

Once again, the republican front worked in the second round of the regional elections thanks to the selflessness of a large part of left-wing voters, particularly in PACA. This is good news. But beyond the immediate relief it brings us, we must welcome it with a certain level of detachment.

First, because the direct consequence of this strategy was to deprive left-wing voters of a true choice and to lead to the absence of progressive representatives in two of the largest French regions.

Then โ€“ and this is the most important โ€“ because each FN wave that the republican front must overcome is higher than the previous one precisely because it feeds on the frustration of FN voters who see it as a manipulation by the establishment.

But with the FN at 30% this time, the next wave could be a dramatic surge because it will be about the presidential election. To avoid this tsunami, it is imperative to transform the hemiplegic electoral republican front (which only operates on the left) into a true political republican front.

To achieve this, the entire right, notably its current leader, must abandon the “neither-nor” stance and unequivocally, without complacency, without missteps, acknowledge that the values of the Republic are incompatible with the program and discourse of the far-right. The left and right can oppose each other on economic, social, and foreign policy. They must come together on republican values. I am particularly thinking of secularism, where both camps need to regroup.

In light of this challenge, it is clear that circumstances have put Christian Estrosi in the front line. His first post-election statement was appropriate and dignified, and his proposal for a territorial council is interesting provided it does not become an empty shell. But it is over time that we can judge the reality and sincerity of his positioning. At the PRG, we will be vigilant observers. Without prejudice.
