We could have written a long editorial for this Sidaction weekend, but we prefer to give you the 2005 figures of AIDS, which clearly show the still too vast extent of its impact.
On March 31, April 1 and 2, 2006, the historical partners of the Sidaction association – TF1, France 2, France 3, France 4, France 5, RFO, CANAL+, ARTE, M6, Europe 1, France Inter, France Info, France Bleu, and RTL – will reaffirm their commitment to the association by organizing SIDACTION 2006 with them.
SIDACTION 2005 raised 4.2 million euros from 92,000 donors and enabled action on all these fronts throughout the year.

AIDS Figures in 2005:
– 150,000 people are living with HIV.
– 7,000 people discovered their seropositivity and 1,500 developed AIDS (as of 12/31/04).
– Women represent 43% of the new HIV infections diagnosed (in 1997: 30%).
– 47% of those who were diagnosed with AIDS were unaware they were seropositive. They learn about it during their medical treatment at the hospital.
– 40,000 people are carriers of the virus without knowing it.
– 41 years is the average age of people afflicted with AIDS: women 38 years, men 43 years.
– 4 regions are the most affected: Ile-de-France, Provence-Alpes-Cรดte d’Azur, Guyana, and the Antilles. They account for 60% of AIDS cases diagnosed in 2004.
– More than half (56%) of new HIV infection diagnoses concern people infected through heterosexual relationships and 22% through homosexual relationships. Contamination through the use of injectable drugs represents only 2% of new diagnoses.
– 30% of those affected by HIV are also affected by one or more hepatitis infections (most often hepatitis C, sometimes hepatitis B).
– 5 to 6% of seropositives are in therapeutic failure (no combination of medications works anymore).
