After the “Night of Solidarity” organized on January 23, the volunteers were able to assess the needs of each individual and register them. They noted that the number of homeless people on the streets of Nice is increasing.
This is the result of the Night of Solidarity, conducted for the fourth consecutive year. It took place simultaneously in 41 municipalities in France. The objective was to assess the situation and the needs of these people in extreme poverty.
Numbers in Constant Increase
For several years, the city of Nice has been facing a worrying rise in the number of homeless people. According to the latest data, 281 people sleep on the streets every night. An increase of 34 people compared to 2023, which counted 247, according to Nice Matin. This dramatic situation is exacerbated by the health and economic crisis, which particularly affected freelancers and shopkeepers. Job loss, economic difficulties, and high rents have led many people to lose their homes.
Local authorities have attempted to respond to this crisis. They have increased the number of spaces in emergency shelters, but these measures remain insufficient given the scope of the problem. The shelters are often overcrowded and cannot accommodate everyone, leaving many vulnerable people without shelter, especially during the winter months.
Associations Mobilized
In response to this crisis, several local associations have mobilized to help the homeless. The Communal Social Action Center (CCAS) and other organizations have organized ““Nights of Solidarity“ to register and support homeless people. In total, more than 200 people roamed the streets of Nice during this evening. The CCAS regularly organizes “Nights of Solidarity” to register the homeless and assess their needs. Meals, warm clothing, and hygiene kits are distributed by volunteers from these associations. In addition, outreach efforts are made to meet the homeless and provide them with medical and psychological support. However, despite these efforts, the current measures remain insufficient to meet the growing demand.
