This Saturday, May 28, 2011, the Amnesty International France groups from the Alpes Maritimes will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the association.
1961-2011: 50 years of defending human rights. For its 50th anniversary, Amnesty International celebrates half a century of hope, struggles, and international solidarity for the defense of human rights starting at 5 p.m. at Place Massรฉna (Gioffredo side).

Amnesty International France calls on every citizen to mobilize and take action so that human rights, which are universal, indivisible, and interdependent, are respected and protected worldwide. “You can defend human rights,” a call to action. The Amnesty International France groups of the Alpes Maritimes invite everyone to join this wave of solidarity so that women and men, wherever they live, are free and equal in dignity and rights.

This Saturday, May 28 at 5 p.m. at Place Massรฉna in NICE (Gioffredo side), the members of Amnesty International’s youth branches in Nice will perform a theatrical representation of the circumstances of the organization’s creation on May 28, 1961, by Peter Benenson:

The theatrical performance will be followed by:

– The lighting of a candle, an emblem of Amnesty International, will be done by an actor portraying Peter Benenson, who will then surround it with barbed wire representing the violations of freedoms,
– A release of homing pigeons, symbolizing the messages, letters, petitions sent daily by the organization to the authorities of violator countries,

The public will be involved throughout the event:

– An invitation will be issued to toast to freedom as our Portuguese students did in 1961 and thereby support all current victims,
– Petitions in favor of 12 people in danger will circulate to collect signatures of support and donations.
