Starting this Thursday, November 14, 2013, at 10 AM, Nice will host the first international conference on Archaeology at the Theater of Photography and Image. The theme is urban fortification through the centuries and the modern issues of its conservation and enhancement in the coastal area of the Mediterranean space.
This event will host knowledgeable scientists and open its conferences to the general public, always curious to learn about its history. On this occasion, it will also be possible to rediscover the exhibition “Diagnose, Dig, Find! Archaeology in Nice” at the Bellanda Tower.
The theme of the conference revolves around the knowledge of fortifications (13th-end of the 17th century), the heritage future of surviving remains in terms of urban planning (connection with the modern city and consideration of monumental heritage within the framework of territorial development), and the enhancement and transmission of this heritage, particularly using new 3D technologies (which will be the focus of a conference on Friday afternoon with two examples from Nice: the Castle Hill and the Fort Mont Alban).
This conference is part of the development of archaeology in Nice. It was initiated by the delegation to Historical Heritage, Archaeology, Niçoise Language and Culture of the City of Nice with the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (regional archaeology service) following the enhancement of the fortifications of the archaeological crypt of Nice.
An organizing committee and a scientific committee have been established to delve deeper into the themes and invite the most suitable specialists for each defined theme. It concludes a series of events dedicated to archaeology in Nice: the national archaeology days in June 2013, the presentation of an exhibition on various archaeological sites and the professions in archaeology, and finally a cycle of seven conferences “Archaeology in Nice: from origins to today”).
