Since this Monday, the Nice detention center, located at 12 Rue de la Gendarmerie, has been declared a cluster again, after more than twenty inmates were identified as positive cases or contacts.
Since January 1st, seven people among the prison population have tested positive for COVID at the Nice detention center. On Monday, the facility had 13 contact cases.
The Nice detention center, with its 500 inmates, is conducive to clusters and had already triggered two the previous year, one in February and one in October. Last autumn, the situation lasted eight weeks.
From now on, potential new arrivals will be incarcerated in other facilities in the region, including in Grasse or Draguignan.
According to the UFAP-UNSA union, the situation forces the facility to halt educational and cultural activities. Nordine Souab, union representative, adds that leaving cells will no longer be allowed, “except for outings for walks or medical emergencies”.
Family visits are still permitted in the visiting room, with mandatory mask-wearing and a plexiglass screen. However, visitors are not required to present a health pass.
