A national day of strike was organized this Thursday, June 3rd. The call was made by the département inter-union group CGT Éduc’action, FSU, SUD Éducation, and the FCPE. The aim was to highlight the demands of teaching assistants for students with disabilities.
“1 in 10 national education agents is an AESH.” This is the harsh observation made by Sandrine Rousset, co-secretary of FSU 06. But this remains insufficient for the unions. They are demanding massive recruitment of AESH to support students with disabilities. For this reason, they want to eliminate “the policy of pooling resources.”
Deteriorating working conditions
In April, the AESH were mobilized to draw attention to their situation. They feel disdained by the national education department. “Only the minister refuses to see the demands massively carried by the AESH. They accompanied staff to bring up these issues during hearings with the DASEN (Academic Director of National Education Services) and the rectors,” denounces Sandrine Rousset.
According to them, the increase in the number of students has not been accompanied by a different organization. Worse, these same children are often in different classes. They are thus demanding the abandonment of local inclusive support hubs.
Precariousness of the profession
All the education unions denounce “this disdain” from the national education department. They demand a salary increase as well as the creation of a public service status for AESH. “I am the mother of a disabled child but also an AESH. I have both perspectives. Recently, I received a notification from the MDPH (Departmental House for Disabled Persons).”
“Originally, I had a certain number of hours notified, but now they no longer give the hours. Parents are in total confusion. I started six years ago with a single insertion contract for two years. I recently asked for a permanent contract, but I was told that my first two years do not count,” details an AESH.
