At the TNN: Dante, a creation by Renato Giuliani based on Dante Alighieri

Renato Giuliani, an actor at the Thรฉรขtre National de Nice, revisits the masterful work of Dante Alighieri.

In this new adaptation, the theatrical inventiveness chosen by the Turin-born artist creates a subtle bridge between the magic of The (Divine) Comedy and the madness of our contemporary world. Our reflection is accompanied by delicate music that gently questions us about the condition of the human being.

Renato Giuliani’s creation encourages us to adopt a supportive and empathetic attitude. With the collaboration of actress-musicians, this adaptation guides us through a spiritual journey in the company of Virgil, Beatrice, and the great St. Bernard of Clairvaux.

If today Dante Alighieriโ€™s work remains so relevant, it owes its significance to its evocation of the “path of rebirth.” Written during the period of Italian political upheaval in the early 14th century, the work of the “father of Italian” comprises three canticles: Inferno (hell), Purgatorio (purgatory), and Paradiso (paradise).

It is in his quest for truth to be reborn that Dante traverses the three supernatural realms to “emerge into the light of day.”

The protagonist shows us the path to follow to amend the aberrations of the human soul that divert us from the right path.

The (Divine) Comedy contains many characteristics of medieval writing and style; however, the work constitutes a fair and alarming representation of our current reality.
