Athletics: Tsegay and Sawyers announced for the Nikaïa meeting

Latest News

Less than a month before the return of the Nikaïa meeting (Saturday, June 17), the organizers have announced the presence of world champion Gudaf Tsegay and European champion Jazmin Sawyers.

The Nikaïa meeting in Nice is starting to attract some big names. As athletes are finalizing their schedules for the upcoming outdoor season, two internationally renowned athletes have already marked the event in the French Riviera on their calendars. It is, therefore, with an eye on their preparation for the World Championships, which will be held from August 19 to 27, 2023, in Budapest, that Gudaf Tsegay and Jazmin Sawyers will be present in Nice on June 17.

This year’s indoor European champion in long jump, Jazmin Sawyers, expressed her eagerness “to participate in this year’s Nikaïa edition. It has been years since I had the opportunity to jump in front of the French public, and I can’t wait to give my best in front of such elite athletes and in a venue like the Charles Ehrmann Stadium, which holds historic significance for our sport”.

Gudaf Tsegay as a Guest Star

But the one who will undoubtedly turn heads is the reigning world champion in the 5,000M, Gudaf Tsegay. The Ethiopian athlete set remarkable records last year and is determined to improve in order to clinch Olympic gold next year. It’s the only title missing from her record at just 26 years old. A true star in middle-distance events, she will compete in a specially designed 10,000M race.

As a reminder, the Nikaïa Meeting will take place on June 17 at the Charles Ehrmann Stadium starting at 7 PM (scheduled to end at 10 PM).
