Australian Open: Nice’s Alizé Cornet eliminated in the quarterfinals

Latest News

The Niçoise was eliminated by the American Danielle Collins this Wednesday in straight sets (7-5, 6-1).

She had managed for the first time to reach the quarter-finals in a Grand Slam tournament but could not go any further. Alizé Cornet (ranked 61st in the world) was defeated by Danielle Collins (ranked 30th in the world) after 1 hour and 28 minutes of play.

Although she leaves Australia empty-handed, the Niçoise did manage to defeat two former world number ones (Garbiñe Muguruza and Simona Halep) and was the first Frenchwoman to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam since Marion Bartoli. That was in 2013, when she won the Wimbledon tournament.

After Gaël Monfils’ defeat this Tuesday, there are no French players left in singles in Melbourne.

The American Danielle Collins will face the Polish Iga Swiatek (ranked 9th in the world) and will attempt for the first time to reach the final of a Grand Slam tournament.
