Leïla Slimani in brief

Leïla Slimani was born in Rabat, Morocco. Upon obtaining her baccalaureate, she left her native land to go to Paris, where she pursued her studies at ESCP Europe to train in media. She then joined the magazine Jeune Afrique, where she worked for years.
Her literary career began in 2013 when her first manuscript was rejected by publishing houses. This led her to a two-month internship at the workshop of writer and publisher Jean-Marie Laclavetine. Almost a year later, she published her first novel Dans le jardin de l’ogre, which was shortlisted among the 5 finalists for the Prix de Flore. In 2016, she won the Prix Goncourt with the publication of her second novel Chanson Douce.
In November 2017, she was made an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters and became the personal representative of President Emmanuel Macron. She was later appointed president of the Prix du Livre Inter and also became a member of the jury for the Deauville American Film Festival. In the following years, she published two other novels: Le parfum des fleurs la nuit and Le pays des autres.

So, see you this afternoon at the Fnac in Nice (Jean-Médecin tram stop) to meet Leïla Slimani.

About the book:
“Year after year, Mathilde returned to the fray. Every summer, when the chergui blew, and the oppressive heat got on her nerves, she would propose the idea of a swimming pool, which revolted her husband. They were doing no harm; they had the right to enjoy life, having sacrificed their best years to war and then to farming that land. She wanted that pool, demanded it as compensation for her sacrifices, her loneliness, her lost youth.”

1968: Through sheer perseverance, Amine has turned his arid land into a thriving enterprise. He now belongs to a new bourgeoisie that prospers, parties, and believes in a bright future. But independent Morocco struggles to forge its new identity, torn between archaic traditions and the illusory temptations of Western modernity, between image obsession and the wounds of shame. It is in this troubled period, between hedonism and repression, that a new generation will have to make choices. “Regardez-nous danser” continues and enriches a vibrant family saga embodied by unforgettable characters.
