The City of Nice proposed an autonomous car-sharing experiment this Monday. A technology resulting from the collaboration of AKKA and Vulog companies. A first in France!
This unprecedented “life-size” test of the first vehicle of its kind will allow a better understanding of this future mode of transport that will revolutionize mobility in the city within 5 to 10 years.
Nice, a pioneer in terms of Smart City—cities using information and communication technologies to “improve” the quality of urban services or reduce their costs—offered a demonstration of autonomous car-sharing yesterday on the Quai des États-Unis. A first in France!

Under the impetus of Christian Estrosi, engaged in a proactive “eco-responsible” transport policy, the City of Nice and the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolitan area wanted to strengthen the use of innovative and environmentally friendly solutions.

AKKA—specialist in technologies applied to autonomous systems, located in Sophia Antipolis—and VULOG—a Nice-based company and a world leader in “free floating” (vehicle sharing without parking stations)—combined their expertise to offer a shared mobility solution dedicated to autonomous vehicles. Engaged in a race against time, all major car manufacturers are investing heavily in autonomous vehicles. Algorithms and matrices enable the machine to operate, following a set of cases and scenarios.
These futuristic designed vehicle-robots, operating without drivers and filled with sensors, are expected to drive on the roads of Smart Cities in the coming years.
