Emmanuel Ethis, Rector of the Academy of Nice and Chancellor of the Universities, presented the 2018-2019 school year at the Nice Rectorate yesterday, a “new step to build a School of Trust”.
First, the numbers: 192,097 young girls and boys will be part of the “armada”. They will only be 768 more than in 2017.
Just three more days of vacation, and it starts again. The start of the school year is on Monday! Emmanuel Ethis presented the main expectations and new features for this new school year to the press yesterday.
This year’s agenda includes three main areas:
The first, allowing all students to better master fundamental skills (reading, counting, writing, and respecting others),
The second, to be better guided towards their future with more effective teaching in mathematics, computer science, and foreign languages, and to prepare the youngest high school students for the baccalaureate reform, which will come into effect in 2021.
The third, to bring together the French around the educational community to affirm the principle of secularism and the culture of equality between girls and boys.
There is also a desire to acclimate students to the State of Emergency status, for a school year under enhanced vigilance, with at least one intrusion attack drill to be conducted at schools up to high school by December.
Mobile phones will once again be prohibited within school premises. The four-day school week is returning in most schools. More than 80% of schoolchildren are affected.
In 2017, the number of first-grade classes had been doubled in priority education zones. This year, the measure is being extended to second-grade classes.
