Nice has 154 public educational institutions.
To demonstrate the size of this community, 29,826 schoolchildren were welcomed this Monday: – 11,650 in kindergarten, – 18,141 in elementary school, – 35 at the specialized school for visually impaired students (Château School).
The school population has been steadily increasing for five years (+0.25%) and is distributed across 1,307 classes: 450 kindergarten classes, 857 elementary classes.
Seven class openings took place at the start of the 2018 school year: – 4 in kindergarten: Fabron, Nice Flore, Saint Charles, and Digue des Français schools, – 3 in elementary: Chalet des Roses, Jules Verne, and Saint Roch elementary schools.
For this academic year, as part of the ongoing reduction of class sizes
for CP and CE1 in REP+ and CP in REP (a government measure taken in 2017),
a total of 50 classes have been reduced in size over 2 years, with work costing a total of €170,000.
More than 2,000 people work to serve the schoolchildren and National Education staff of Nice’s public institutions: ATSEM (Specialized Territorial Agency for Nursery Schools), maintenance staff, school custodians, “papis et mamies trafic” (crossing guards), education service and school workshop staff, AVS (School Life Auxiliary) agents, morning welcome and evening study hall staff, economes (school treasurers), food service staff and “kitchen preparers,” and temporary staff ensuring cafeteria supervision.
228 crossing guards, in both public and private schools under contract, ensure the safety of students during entry and exit times.
The cost of the maintenance work carried out over the summer is more than 1.4 million euros for the maintenance of public schools.
Finally, major projects continue for the creation of the new Central Kitchen, as well as at Corniche Fleurie school and the Gorbella school group.
An extremely positive outcome has been noted from the experiment of having an unarmed municipal police officer present in schools, conducted in three school groups. Every school that requests it can benefit from an officer from the Municipal Police Directorate.
