Basketball: Cavigal secures its first European victory

Latest News

For their first home game in the European Cup, the Niss’Angels secured a fine victory against the Swiss club Fribourg, with a score of 80-55.

The Niss’Angels made no mistakes last night at Leyrit. After their defeat last Wednesday on the court of Basket Landes, for the first day of EuroCup, the Nice team caught up well in front of their home crowd. A clear success achieved with a score of 80 to 55.

The Cavigal team could once again count on its leaders to make a difference. Leading the charge, Romy Bar, the captain from the French Riviera, filled up the stat sheet again with 14 points, 8 assists, and 5 rebounds, and an impressive 6/7 shooting. Following her lead, the American Victoria Maccaulay scored 18 points, 7 rebounds. The center is increasingly asserting herself as the number one weapon of the Angels.

A first half of high quality

After a tight first quarter, the Angels picked up the pace in the second quarter. The team from the French Riviera raised defensive pressure, and in offense, they connected effortlessly. Romy Bar distributed assist after assist, and the Nice team widened the gap before halftime.

Victoria Maccaulay near the basket and Laetitia Kamba from afar frustrated the Swiss defense, which didn’t know where to focus. At halftime, the team from the French Riviera boasted a shooting success rate of 80%! This allowed the Cavigal to lead 38-24 at the break.

The rest of the match was uneventful. The team from the French Riviera managed their lead perfectly throughout the second half. At the end of the match, Rachid Méziane even allowed two young players from the training center to take the court. Salomé Cordinier and Lea Bender made their debuts in a European competition.

Thanks to this victory, the Angels maintain all their chances of qualifying for the Round of 16 of the EuroCup. They now have 3 points and remain close to the leader Venice, which has 4 points after its win against Basket Landes. The Cavigal could take the lead of the group if they win against the Italian club next Wednesday at Leyrit. But in the meantime, they have a match on Sunday at 3:30 PM against Charleville-Mézières, as part of the 6th day of the Women’s League.
