Bernard Maccario (Director General of the Francophonie Games): Yes, I am satisfied!

Latest News

Bernard Maccario wanted to take stock halfway through the Francophonie Games, for which he is the “dominus” as the general director of the Groupement dโ€™Intรฉrรชt Gรฉnรฉral, the governing and organizing body of the event that brings together French-speaking countries for athletic and cultural competitions.

With his usual ability to dodge criticism, Bernard Maccario skillfully avoided the expressed criticisms (as well as those circulating behind the scenes) regarding the quality of the organization which, it is said and written, is far from perfect. But, truth be told, how can the organization be held responsible if about twenty athletes take advantage of the opportunity to leave their delegation?

Or, if a Minister imposes a rapper who sings for “five minutes” during the opening ceremony which lasted more than “two hours.” Not to mention the officials who use the opportunity to put themselves in the spotlight, despite not being part of the cast of protagonists, making sometimes inappropriate and often untimely statements, creating, in fact, a real faux pas?

Would it not be better to return to the values and the figures?

Firstly, to note that these Games, organized mainly by Nice and Azur volunteers, also benefit the people of Nice who seem to appreciate them, as demonstrated by the massive attendance at the various sporting events, but especially the cultural ones (hundreds of people attended competitions like hip-hop, giant puppets, creation dance, as well as storytelling and literature).

Yes, the main goal of gathering nearly 3,000 young people from all countries in a shared environment despite their diversity has been achieved, and that is undoubtedly the most important.

Moreover, that a complex organization (managing 20 competition sites plus those for training and 7 residential locations including accommodation for officials and managers) has few marginal flaws, which is practically inevitable as those accustomed to attending these international events know, is not that important.

For perfection enthusiasts, the appointment is set for next time, if there is one… The essential lies elsewhere, as Bernard Maccario aptly noted.

The days go by, competitions take place in a sporting spirit, everyone seems to appreciate the hospitality, memories accumulate before the great final celebration which will be held next Sunday, September 15th, at the Charles Ehrmann Sports Park (free entry) for the closing ceremony of the Games which will have been imperfect only in the somewhat too narrow minds of some.
