The exhibition “Berthe Morisot in Nice. Impressionist Stops” lands at the Musรฉe des Beaux-Arts from June 7 to September 29.

This year, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Impressionist movement, the City of Nice and the Musรฉe des Beaux-Arts Jules Chรฉret are dedicating a major exhibition to Berthe Morisot. Designed within the framework of the Musรฉe d’Orsay’s territorial operation “The 150th Anniversary of Impressionism“, in partnership with the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa, and with the decisive support of the artist’s family.

“Berthe Morisot in Nice, Impressionist Stops” evokes the two stays of the painter on the Riviera during the winters of 1881-1882 and 1888-1889. This exceptional project, centered on the first woman to participate in the Impressionist exhibitions, explores moments in the painter’s life and creation that have not previously been the subject of dedicated research. For the first time, the Musรฉe des Beaux-Arts Jules Chรฉret is gathering a collection of sixty of her works created on the Riviera, lent notably by the Musรฉe d’Orsay, the Musรฉe Marmottan Monet, the Princely Palace of Monaco, the Nelson Atkins Museum of Kansas City, the National Museum of Stockholm, the Musรฉe des Beaux-Arts de Lyon as well as numerous other public and private collections.

A Tribute to Nice

The exhibition highlights numerous portraits and self-portrait, as well as paintings of the city of Nice such as: The Port of Nice (1881, Musรฉe Marmottan Monet), The Beach of Nice (1881-1882, private collection), Niรงoise Peasant Woman, Cรฉlestine (1889, Musรฉe des Beaux-Arts de Lyon), The Mandolin (1889, private collection), Under the Orange Trees (1889, Nelson Atkins Museum, Kansas City) and The Orange Picking at Cimiez (Grasse, Musรฉe dโ€™Art et dโ€™Histoire de Provence). The Musรฉe des Beaux-Arts Jules Chรฉret is also displaying paintings by Claude Monet and Auguste Renoir, who were also present on the Mediterranean coast during the same period and captivated by this brilliant environment. The exhibition notably includes The Villas at Bordighera (1884, Musรฉe d’Orsay), a gift from Claude Monet to Berthe Morisot.

The exhibition will be on display from June 7 to September 29 at the Musรฉe des Beaux-Arts in Nice.
