The vote count is continuing state by state and now appears to give Joe Biden a slight advantage at this hour. But beyond this suspenseful count, let’s take a step back: democracy seems fragile, the rule of law is trembling on one of its pillars.
The situation, however, is simple: not all the votes have been counted yet. As long as this is the case, there is no result. It’s as simple as that. But Donald Trump sees it differently: he suggests that the ballots currently being counted are almost rigged to favor his opponent. In fact, these ballots are simply from large urban centers, where Democrats are more strongly established.
The American president had anticipated the threat of acting this way. But a threat is one thing; acting on it is another. It’s astonishing to witness. Donald Trump doesn’t seem ready to accept the result unless it is favorable to him. The highest power, the executive, is on the verge of insurrectional behavior. A familiar attitude in non-democratic authoritarian regimes. Except that we are in the United States, nonetheless.
