The 2013 Sports Awards Ceremony and the presentation of the 2014 Municipal Agenda of the City of Biot took place in a warm atmosphere.
During this 5th edition of the Sports Awards, the City of Biot awarded 87 athletes for their achievements over the past year, from the departmental level to international competitions. Eleven disciplines were thus highlighted: football, basketball, equestrianism, tennis, judo, karate, shooting sports, acrobatic gymnastics, sailing, automobile rally, and taekwondo.
More than 200 people attended the evening, during which, before presenting the trophies, the officials emphasized the values conveyed by sports such as concentration, endurance, and self-improvement. “Sports also have social significance. Because sports are more than just sports. They encompass the fundamentals of education, integration, openness to others, solidarity, support, and the pride of flying high and proud the colors of the sports club one belongs to.”
The Mayor of Biot also paid tribute to Nelson Mandela by quoting him: “Sports have the power to change the world. They have the power to unite people in a way that is almost unique. Sports can create hope where there was only despair. They are more powerful than governments in breaking down racial barriers. Sports laugh in the face of all forms of discrimination.”
After this bounty of awards, the guests (athletes, coaches, families, representatives of associations and businesses…) received the 2014 edition of the City of Biot’s agenda, unveiled for the occasion.
On an international level, Anthony Ségur, 2013 vice-champion of France in shooting sports (Field Crossbow), won the bronze medal at the European Junior Championships in Innsbruck; the trio formed by Caroline and Pauline Bertorello with Laura Manganelli in acrobatic gymnastics won 4 national titles this year (quarter and semi-final in the French Championship, French Cup and Junior French Championship) and won the bronze medal at the Acro Cup Sofia (Bulgaria); while in taekwondo, Julia Irène, Dimitri Lelong, Philéas Pasqualini, and Laura Rineiro all stood on the podiums of international tournaments.
